is it possible to install a hcfpcimodem on a 2.6.5 kernel?
it works on 2.4.26 fine, but on 2.6.5 won't compile. |

I think You need to buy a licence the one in portage doesn't work with 2.6. Check this out
https://www.linuxant.com/drivers/
Personally I wouldn't pay for a modem driver I'd rather just get an external modem. |

I read some of the Linuxant web site, including the FAQ's and I can appreciate where they are coming from. I hope that they are successful. The price ($14.95 USD) is pretty reasonable, but I agree with pinr.
It's a rare occurrence, once a year or so, that I have to dial up. If I had to use a modem regularly, I would rather buy a modem that works in Linux than support a hardware manufacturer that forces you to pay for drivers even if it costs me more. The price of those damned principles of mine sure can add up
Mine came built into an iBook and, fortunately, I don't need it since I can boot OS X in a pinch. Otherwise, the situation sucks. _________________ Ask Questions the Smart Way - by ESR |

Yes, but don't forget that the modem driver in portage works at full speed (56Kbps not 14Kbps as stated on the webpage). The only restrictions are that you cannot use it with the 2.6 kernel and you need to have the preemptive option disabled in the kernel config. |

Yeah, pinr, I realize that. If I needed my modem I would consider building a 2.4.x kernel and having it as an option in yaboot. But there is too much functionality that the 2.6.x kernels offer that I'm not willing to give up and I don't really care about the modem. Like I said, if I'm desperate enough to dial up I can always boot OS X. I understand that not everyone has that luxury. _________________ Ask Questions the Smart Way - by ESR |

It does, mainly because it's the last non-comercial driver released. The free drivers were crippled after that release.
My encounter with connexant came pre-installed in my gf's machine. I'd buy her an external modem but she's going broadband shortly and we'll get a new modem for that anyway
If you're feeling adventurous, the very last driver in portage (masked but works for me) was supposed to work for 2.5 kernels. It might be possible to update it work under 2.6. Best of luck if you fancy the attempt. _________________ Don't let THEM immanentize the Eschaton! |
