ok, I have installed gentoo.
When I boot up and press enter on the gentoo install it goes into something sort of like dos. If I pressed 'c' on the startup screen and go into the command part, then put in 'boot -f kernel-2.4.25-gentoo-r2' I get this error 'ERROR 8: Kernel needs to be loaded before booting'.
So any help? I used genkernel, grub, and a x86 system.

If by "sort of like dos" you mean you boot to a command prompt, then, congratulations! You've installed Gentoo!
If you want to install a graphical desktop environment, you'll have to install an X server (either xfree or xorg) and an environment like gnome or kde. A good howto to walk you through the process can be found here.
If I've misinterpreted what happens when you boot please post more details. _________________ WARNING: Not reading the Gentoo Handbook can be hazardous to your computer! |

I have found a thread in the mailing list that explains what is going on. It might be your problem:

OK, boys and girls, in the true spirit of linux, I figgered it out by
fiddling around. At the grub prompt, I entered
grub> boot (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage
where bzImage was a symlink to linux-2.4.22-etcetera, and I actually got,
GUESS WHAT??? Half a freakin' boot.
Kernel panic at the root filesystem mount with the following message:
kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 8:02
spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
linux is such a tease,

by sort of like dos I mean it goes through a bunch of text that go's by quickly then says something along the lines of:
busybox [version] shell
type 'help' for help
/# [now I can type stuff here]
If it is installed then and thx, thought I might have made a mistake causing this |

Ah, in that case something is definitely wrong. I'd follow the link posted by Deathwing above and see if that helps. I've seen this before in other posts too (but I don't remeber the solution ) so you could also try searching the forums. _________________ WARNING: Not reading the Gentoo Handbook can be hazardous to your computer! |
