i know this may have been topic of discussion before but i dont think its exactly the same. ive altered the smb.conf as show below. any help would be appreciated. Here are the details.
- gentoo linux with samba working
-windows xp pro
so i set up the shares in the smb.conf and am able to view the computer from windows xp but when i try to access that cpu i get a login / passwd prompt. i try all the sets of passwd's for the gentoo box and cannot get access. i try to run smbpasswd and i alter the SMB pass and it says failed to find passdb. Not sure what this means or if i need it at all. This is all on a local net with nothing fancy setup(on a workgroup not a domain).
Please help.
These are the lines not commented out of my smb.conf:
workgroup = <my workgroup>
netbios name = <my netbios name>
server string = Samba Server %v
printcap name = lpstat
load printers = yes
printing = cups
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
hosts allow = 192.168.1
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/private/smbpasswd
socket options = blah
dns proxy = no
[shares] set up correctly |

Ah, I have solved my own problem as well
For anyone else having problems, here are a few pointers:- Always make sure you've run smbpasswd *correctly*. There are plenty of pitfalls etc to watch out for. This is what got me.
- Make your /etc/samba/smb.conf is as simple as possible at first, and build it up one feature at a time.
- Use Samba's Official Documentation to help you - it worked perfectly for me, following that.
Best of luck! _________________ Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopædia |
