I am trying to configure my gentoo box as a peer2peer network filter. I want to use string matching with iptables, but I have so far been unsuccesful. I am using mm-sources-2.6.5mm6 and I have emerged iptables-1.2.9. I have also tried the source code for iptables-1.2.9 as well as the latest patchomatic update patch-o-matic-ng-20040302.tar.bz2.
My Results so far:
I can't find where string matching is when I do make menuconfig, am I missing something?? I have tried patchomatic and when I do ./runme string it complains about my kernel being 2.6:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to Patch-o-matic (1.14)!
Kernel: /usr/src/linux
Iptables: /usr/src/iptables
Each patch is a new feature: many have minimal impact, some do not.
Almost every one has bugs, so don't apply what you don't need!
-------------------------------------------------------
Already applied:
Not all requirements fulfilled for string, skipping:
requirement 'linux < 2.6.0' not fulfilled
Excellent! Source trees are ready for compilation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so I look I load make menuconfig and look around for a while trying to find string or string matching or any acronym of string! If someone knows how to do this please help. I can't get string matching to work!!!! _________________ "The heart of Gentoo is that concern for others, and the joy we had helping others."

OK, the solution here is to emerge gentoo-sources, then configure your kernel and whatnot, then reboot with the new kernel, once inside, emerge -C iptables (incase u have a junk copy with 2.6) then emerge iptables. Now that you have this done, you need to download the source code for iptables and then download the latest patchomatic (for 2.4 kernels!) then apply the patch. I did succesfully get string matching loaded and working, however kazaa being the sneaky software it is, encrypts its packets after a while and then string matching no longer works, I have also tried FTWALL and IPP2P, they both rely on string matching it seems because they couldn't block the latest kazaa either! But anyway, if you have an questions or want to know more I will be glad to answer. Gentoo is the best! I have helped about 8 people install and use Gentoo and they all love it!
