Currently, we have DOS Network Bootdisks which load up run Ghost, and do automated saves/recovery of the users HDD. This is all fine and dandy, however, I would like to move the entire thing over to Linux (and moreso Gentoo because it's where I'm more familiar).

Basically, all I want to know is. Is it possible to strip Gentoo down to it's utter basics (network, terminal, bash), no X, mouse or anything so it's very small. Take an image of the HDD which is then loaded over PXE.

All I need gentoo to do, is to use samba to query a domain controller (authentication), mount a netshare share and then do a dd of /dev/hda into a file on the netshare share.

Is it possible to take the Gentoo LiveCD, and start scripting (bash) into it so after it's finished does what it has to do, I can make it run a set of commands automatically?

I don't need to install Gentoo, just use it ...

Does this make sense?

To do this with Gentoo you could probably start with a Gentoo stage (2,3) build and modify it to do the things you require. Build it into an initrd and use something like PXELinux to load the initrd from your PXE server.

Thare are perhaps better distros to use. You don't, for example, require all the trappings of Python, GCC and other dev tools, which you will get with a basic Gentoo. You might like to try Slackware as a slim binary distro. There are online examples of building really small Slack setups for booting from compact flash etc. Alternatively just modify the Slack install CD setup.
