Hi folks,

I'm currently planing to set up a new computer for getting work done, no gaming at all. I want it to be silent and small and so I was having a look at barebone systems.

I found the Biostar iDEQ 200V to be a pretty cheap solution (130 Euros) and found only a few reviews. The c't, a german computer magazine, is saying a lot of bad things about barebone systems in general, while an online review by a fellow linux users sounds pretty good.

Does anyone have some personal experience with the Biostar iDEQ 200V or another of the iDEQ 200 series (or even with barebones in general)? Would be glad to get some input soon.

Thanks in advance.

hardisks are the loudest thing in my rig{1} but its hardly compact, fact is the only way to get a truly quiet pc is a laptop since fans etc will always create, if you have modest needs ebay for an old ibm laptop and get some portability also

{1} most of the components cost a fortune anyway(dont ask) so i bought with low noise in mind

True, hard disks usually are the most noisy component when using silent fans. Thinking about my 40GB hard disks in my current system makes me want to buy a new one. I heard Seagate and Samsung are both pretty silent, especially if you go with 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm. And the prices are not bad too, I think I can almost afford a new 120GB hard disk simply by selling my two old 40GB hard disks on ebay.

I currently own an old IBM laptop, a pretty neat T20. But, honestly, as much as I love it, it's nothing I can work on for hours, especially when I have to do graphical stuff. 14" @ 1024x768 just don't cut it then.

Thus I'm pretty stuck with a desktop-like pc, and the smaller the more appealing it is to me. I don't plan on plugging in a lot of components. It's basically a cd burner and a hard disk along with the on-board stuff.

Anyway, I'm still wondering if your mini-barebone like the Biostar iDEQ 200V is producing more noise than your previous desktop pc. Anyone?

dreas,

My iDeq 210p is loud as hell. I don't know how much of it is the system fan, the case fan, or the gpu fan, but the stock fans are waaaaay too loud. I'm going to be buying some additional equipment next month, and i'm going to install new fans, hopefully that will solve the problem. I'll keep you posted.

The other complaint that I have is that occasionally, my system just does not want to boot. The power button simply just doesn't respond. I unplug the power from the PSU, and plug it back in and viola. Once it wouldn't boot for like twenty minutes, then I went back after dinner and it was fine. No idea what's up with that.

Other than those two issues, which are probably fixable and maybe are just my box, I love the thing.
Could use a second PCI slot tho... (it has 1 agp, 1 pci, & 1 miniPCI)

sean
