Having upgraded KDE the other day, I booted to find no icons (as I had been warned I might). The problem, from the X start up log was that all the KDE apps were being run using a different version of libpng to the one they were compiled with. This is a bug which needs addressing, possibly to do with the order of the e-builds, but I wasn't watching the compilation process.
It boils down to the fact that the KDE can compiled against libpng.so.3, but looks for libpng.so.2 (which exists, but is an incompatable version). The temporary solution which has succeeded for me is to symlink /usr/lib/libpng.so.2 to /usr/lib/libpng.so.3.x.x. However, I don't know what will happen when I try an app which relies on the older version, so a solution to this (other than removing and recompiling the KDE and libpng from scratch!) would be appreciated.
