Hello everbody. This is my first time working with Linux, and I have decided to try Gentoo and start from stage one. I encountered several problems along the way, and restarted the install several times. This last time, I made it to bootstrapping with no errors, however, about half an hour, or 45 minutes into bootstrapping, it fails. This is what I have on my screen when it fails:

Code:

Any help would be great.

try to shift+pgup to scroll up and include more output. (you can't switch between VC, it'll erase the cache!)
and of course try to `emerge sync` and then do the bootstrap phase again ;-)

I scrolled up, and I see:

Code:

Out of Memory: Killed process 25890 (cc1).
gcc: Internal error: Terminated (pogram cc1)

Could that be fixed with more RAM, or swap?

yes, how much memory do you have now?
there's something about 300MB in the handbook... try to add swap.

I only have 64MB of ram, and I set up a 512MB swap, as the installation guide told me to do.

mkswap /dev/swapdevice
swapon /dev/swapdevice
64+512 is more than enough.

Then it's obviously not that. I'll try emerge sync and then bootstrapping again.

Edit: emerge sync told me I am up to date. I've already tried bootstrapping again, I've recieved this error twice. I don't know what to do now.

Ok I have made it further. But now I am having an error with GRUB.

Code:
kernel /kernel-2.4 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda3
Error 15 File not found

This is my problem. I am not sure why this is not working, so any help would be great.

ok, I'll assume that your swap is working (try to exec `dmesg | grep swap`), there should be a line saying something like "adding 512000k of swap at /dev/hda3 priority -2" or something similar.

it seems that you're running `genkernel`, right? I've never done it, I'm compiling my kernels "by hand" - don't afraid of that, it's very easy if you have some knowledge about what filesystems you're using, your processor, IDE chipset, etc etc.
GRUB says "Error 15 File not found" - seems that there's some missing file ;-). Try to post your /boot/grub/grub.conf (if you followed the installation guide and thus have separate /boot partition, you'll have to mount it manually - `mount /boot` as root)

Check the name of your Kernel
You can find out the exact name by calling
Code:
ls /boot

if you get a device error the you will need to mount your boot partition
Code:
mount /dev/{your boot partition ID} /boot

otherwise you should get a file list of the boot folder. Make sure you get the Kernel name exact, including capital letters (took me ages to realise why mine didin't work until I remembered that one!)

yes, keys, you are probably using the kernel kernel-2.4.25-gentoo-r2. since that is the one i am using, and you gave me your copy of the cd!
