text editor with support for terminal escape sequences

I want to embed escape sequences such as "<esc>[7m" in a help file, and have a console-based editor interpret them (in this case by putting the text after that point in reverse-video). Anybody know of a tool like that? I can find lots of editors with context-sensitive highlighting, but that is not the same thing.
