Hi
Reiser 3 is the working mans filesystem, and emerge downloads, compiles and installs. It will not work however on WineX, as you are supposed to pay for this....

reiser3 = short for reiserfs version 3. It's a file system type. Similar to ext3 in that they both are journaled but reiser does extremely well on saving space with lots of smaller files. The distinction in calling it "reiser3" is used because there's different versions of the file system that've been made over the years; for instance, version 4 is getting closer to being usable.
emerge allows you to control installation of about any program you can think of. Like if I enter "emerge mozilla" it figures out what mozilla needs/depends on, downloads the sources for them, installs them, and then finally does the same for mozilla. emerge is simply a complete source-based "package manager." So for your question, it will download the sources and install them for you.
edit: oh yeah; the guy above is correct. with winex emerge eventually stops and tells you what file you have to download from the transgaming website to finish the emerge. This is because winex is a subscription-based program. You can only download it if you pay for the subscription. |

bit off-topic, but I can't really explain the TS' questions better then slycordinator.
WineX has a free CVS version. Is that in portage (portage = the system which holds information about the packages that emerge van install)? |

Unfortunately no, WineX-CVS is not in portage. This was due to some issues with transgaming not allowing gentoo to have it distributed, I don't know the exact details, but they are preventing any distribution from including the CVS version, mainly because the CVS version is supposed to get developers to help test and submit fixes, AFAIK. |

Hi
From the ebuild :
Quote: |
* This package was removed from portage tree due to the request from Transgaming. Here is an extract from their email:
* The primary reason for the WineX CVS tree being publicly available
* under the Aladdin Free Public License (AFPL) is to give outside
* developers who have an interest in the project the ability to track
* our most current work, and to assist us with code or testing.
* Our work is very complex though, and only a limited number of
* developers have the skills required to contribute.
* The intent of the public CVS tree is *not* to provide a free version
* of WineX that can be used without paying for it. We want everyone
* with an interest in the project to contribute, whether they contribute
* code, or money to assist us with our development efforts. We felt that
* the AFPL was a good compromise to allow that to happen, which is why
* we chose it.
