i backup my gentoo-machine with rsync over my lan.
i exclude the dirs /tmp, /proc, /mnt, /usr/portage, /var/tmp/portage.
any idea what can be excluded else, but having a runable system after recovering? |

Just a little suggestion, but what I do is only backup changes from a default installed state. There is no need to backup your whole system as than can be easily installed from the web or CDs, only back up your home data and configuration data. Also I recommend using dar [url] http://dar.linux.free.fr/ [/url] as a very nice differential backup utility. If you really want to be able to restore your whole system then consider doing as i say above but using a partition imaging program like partimage http://www.partimage.org to image your default installed system before making changes...

i have visited the dar-homepage. and i must say: "look's really good". perhaps this will be my next backup solution. but no more need for partimage then...
time to go to bed...
