i have terayon cable modem and i'm trying to config my network connection on gentoo...
on startup i get these errors:
SIOCSIFADDR: no such device eth0: unknown interface: no such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: no such device eth0: unknown interface: no such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: no such device
and same with eth1.
i was told i need special modem modules, but the manufacturer's site says they don't support linux. anyone knows where i can get those modules?
help would be greatly appreciated... |

What model is it? I have a TJ 715X and it works fine. Although I'm not using USB (I'm using 10/100 BASE-T) I've had no problems with it. |

the consensus on sites turned up by google seems to be to use ethernet.
Why are you using usb to connect to your cable modem? _________________ --

i'm using usb, 'cause i couldn't install it with an ethernet card.... i think 'cause my E. card sucks or maybe because my ISP sucks... *shrugs* |

I guess people have trouble switching from usb to ethernet. I'm not sure if it's a modem issue or an ISP issue, but essentially the problem lies in the fact that you've already got a MAC address associated with your internet connection and you're only allowed one association (unless you pay more, etc).
Whether it's on the modem itself, or through docsis with the ISP, power cycling fixes the issue 95% of the time. _________________ --

yay i can connect through ethernet. but now i can't get online on knoppix, gentoo and even gentoo livecd. i tried to install nvidia driver through the kernel config file but for some reason it got screwed up and now everytime i boot to gentoo i get a black screen with enlarged pic of a tux and blinking cursor. i can't type anything there.
hmm, weird. |
