There's no change if you have Gentoo already installed. The version number just refers to the fact that there's a new live CD available. If you do really want to change then I guess you could adapt the 1.4 - 2004.0 procedure.

cp -a default-$arch-2004.0 default-$arch-2004.1

im sure i can do that

echo "default-$arch-2004.1" > /usr/portage/profiles/default-$arch-2004.0/deprecated

seems ok

but what is this? >>
Tweak your catalyst spec file to use the new profile name.

I could be wrong (and I'm sure he'll correct me if I am), but the point Celtis is trying to make is that, assuming you have Gentoo installed already, there's really no need to do anything when a new Live CD comes out. All the tools you need to keep your system up to date are already there. If you've got a 'Net connection and you're using those tools, you'll have the same thing that you would if you installed from the latest Live CD.

Yes, the impression I've always had is that the version numbers for gentoo is just for the live cds, which only make a difference when installing (due to slightly different contents on the cd) but an installed gentoo system is always the same if you
emerge rsync
and
emerge -u world

That's absolutely correct, Gentoo itself doesn't have a need for version numbers, and even if they did what good would they do anyway? I mean take apache for example, some people use 1.3 some are on 2. Giving Gentoo a version number makes no difference and doesn't help distinguish which version of apache they have installed. The only use for the version numbers is to inform people that there's a new live CD available and that the GRP packages (may) have been updated.
