Just started an install yesterday w/ 2004.0. When 2004.1 came out i figured why not just d/l it and use it. So I've put the cd into 3 different computers now that i've installed gentoo on and it wont find the network card in any of them. 2004.0 found it but 2004.1 hasn't? Is there a problem with this. I know i could just modprobe and probably get it going but 3 machines 3 different net cards that all worked with 2004.0 and now not with 2004.1?

Same here. I have a VIA-RHINE in it, so I figure: "Okay, do 'modprobe via-rhine'." It apparently works! But no, it doesn't. It'll load the module, yes. It'll activate the network car with '/etc/init.d/net.eth0 stop' and 'start'. But the ADSL does not work even when it is configured with the 'adsl-setup' script. Also, upon doing a 'modprobe pppoe', it just says, 'Could not load module: invalid symbols'. 8O

WTF? Did someone borked it?

I get this too with a 8139too based card.

Code:
# modprobe 8139too
# dhcpcd eth0

Works fine after that, but 2004.0 picked the card up automagically just fine.

Me Too!!!!

Yeah, chalk me up as well. 1.4 installed fine on an identical Dell Poweredge 400SC with no problem.

Hints and tips appreciated.

Link: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49230

Guess I should have checked first.

That bug seems to be fore the NVIDIA Nforce ethernet only. Do we need to add something to it to let them know it doesn't stop there?

In my case is not related to nFORCE 2. I do have Intel chipset and spare ethernet PCI card Realtek 8139. The problem is related to Firewire (1394), since eth0 is assigned to firewire card instead of ethernet card. So:

Code:
rmmod eth1394
modprobe 8139too

Owners of different ethernet cards have to change 8139too to the proper module. Anyway now it work.

Hope it helps

I added a link to this thread and a desc of my problem. I don't know what the official protocol is on whether to have everyone add to the bug or just keep posting here, but I think the devs can follow the link from the bug report.

... it reads 2004.0 at the top of the initial screen and not 2004.1. And no network detection is confirmed once again. Also the smp kernel hasn't booted for me either.

2004.1 did not detect network card on three different machines. 2004.0 had no such problem. This is already in Bugzilla. I posted it this morning and apparently it was posted more than once. So the Gentoo folks know about this one. This was my first Gentoo experience...

Don't let it get to you!! GENTOO ROCKS!! If you must get an install and can't get your card installed w/ modprobe use the 2004.0 cd it'll work just the same.

You bet it rocks. Actually I think the Gentoo community rocks. I'll be up and running soon enough. Patience is a virtue.
