I have 2 network-cards 3c590 and 3CSOHO100B-TX...
They both use the same module 3C59x..

3c590 starts as eth0 and works fine but 3CSOHO dosen't start....

How do I start 3CSOHO and make it eth1?

<edit>
I was usin the wrong driver for the second network card, it used a tulip driver....
Now the problem has been solved and I thank all that have responded to my plea for help.
</edit>

Maybe emerging hotplug helps? Did you edit your /etc/conf.d/net? How about
Code:
ifconfig eth1 up

Take a look at your boot messages. There you can figure out, whether eth1 is recognized.

Okay, try editing your /etc/modules.d/aliases somehow this way:

Code:
alias eth1 8139cp

Now, edit your /etc/conf.d/net like:
Code:
iface_eth1="up"

Don't forget to run
Code:
modules-update

after this.
And make sure to have backup copies of the edited files, just in case, anything goes wrong.

Still the same...
Code:
 * Bringing eth1 up...
eth1: unknown interface: No such device                                             [ !! ]
