|

Hi fellow gentooer's I have a quick question concerning which Wireless PCI Card to go with.
The D-Link DWL-G510 or the Netgear MA311
What I really need to know is are both of these cards supported by the 2.6 kernel and wat are some of your preferences. Also is there any reason that the 802.11B Netgear card is more expensive than the 802.11G D-Link card? Seems a lil' funny to me.
All replies are greatly appreciated ASAP as I am doing a base install right now and want to go get the card from COMPUSA in an hour or so.
~Thx |

***BUMP***
Can someone please tell me if the D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless G PCI card I just bought today will work for sure w/ the 2.6 kernel series? I really need to know this. Also does anyone know what chipset and drivers support this card? (Possibly Prism2 or wlan-ng I dunno I have been doing a lot or research and this still has eluded me )
All replies are greatly appreciated. |

The chipset is important - a quick look here shows most cards, but 802.11g cards are a bit difficult, cause there are only a few supported chipsets.
[Edit:] I looked at D-Link and cannot find a DWL-G510 - just a 802.11b card called DWL-510 |

Thanks for the link that helped quite a bit. Well dang it then I researched the forums yesterday and saw a few posts recomending this wireless PCI card so I went and grabbed it now it looks as if I am going to have to return that card and either go w/ the DWL-G520/+ (the + cards use the TI chipset which I am assuming is the Texas Instruments chipset and the regular one's (DWL-G520) use the Atheros chipset). Or should I just say the heck w/ D-Link and go w/ the Netgear MA311 wireless-B card which has support w/ the Prism 2/2.5/3 chipset or better yet the Netgear WG311 wireless-G which has Atheros chipset support? I would really like to stay w/ the 802.11G standard as there is only like a $15-20 difference in card price.
Please help me sort this out guys
***EDIT*** The only difference in the D-Link DWL-G510 and the D-Link DWL-G520 (both 802.11G PCI cards) is that the later listed is the extreme edition (108 MBPS) so I think the chipset should be the same wouldn't you think so? Seems like a whole lot of work to throw a whole other chipset in just an upgrade D-Link did to the card (where it will push supposedly 108 mbps if you are also using their router in D-Link turbo mode or somethin' like that. |

You could also try the not-so-nice-solution ndiswrapper. Works nice with my Dell Truemobile 1300. |
