Hi all, I'm a total nub to linux and have completed a stage 1 install using stage1-x86.2004.1 and the kernel is the gentoo kernel.
I have also used the gentoo sources, grub and gnome as the boot wm.
I have added vga=791 to the kernel config as an extra just as the handbook describes.

After Reboot, i get the lovely purplish boot option screen, i hit enter to load Gentoo (haven't had a chance to do it again with C to see if command line comes up) anyhow after hiting enter, the HD light on my laptop runs and runs and runs but NOTHING on the LCD.
Zilch Zero Nada..
Waiting, hit enter and the HD light goes again like i started something that i couldn't see.

Anyhow my specs are:

Laptop- Compaq Armada M700 PIII 650Mhz (648 true speed)
Video- Ati Rage 8MB max res 1024x768 @ 16Bit

I have done EVERYTHING that the manual says as this has taken me a good 12+ hours to get through (ommiting the aditional and optional sections).

Any Ideas?

You don't get anything at all after the grub menu? No errors, no weird characters?

You have two options, you can select your Linux partition on the grub menu and hit "e" to edit it and put the right paramaters in there (you need to point it to your /boot partition and to where your kernel is), or you can boot back into the live CD, remount your hard drives, re-enter your chroot, and fix whatever it is you missed the first time.

My guess is a) you didn't set grub up right, or b) you didn't copy your kernel to /boot after you compiled it. But I could be wrong.

Good luck,

Dave

Hey thanx for the reply,

No garbled text nothing but a black screen.

I copied the kernel after compiling it, even made sure by listing it after.

I setup Grub exactly as it is shown in the linux handbook as I have used the 3 partition scheme as the handbook did.

I guess i can go into the live CD and check it again, but i'm quite sure i did it exactly as in the handbook.

Sounds like you forgot something in your kernel compile. Chroot into your install and check your device drivers/graphics support section.

I did remove the AGP support because I don't think my Vid card is AGP supported, yet I don't recall selecting a video driver... hrmmmm.... sorry... haven't slept much in the last few days. Any idea what vid driver the kernel configuration should be set to ? I did add vga = 791 for the frame buffer.

Your problem is happening before video drivers are occuring, unless you did something zany trying to configure FB. If you see the POST, then you should be able to boot into Gentoo.... X might not work, but you should be able to use it in CLI mode....which is why we are telling you to re-check your grub and your kernel config. Remember you have to specifically mount /boot in Gentoo, it doesn't mount automatically.

Try this in your kernel config: device drivers/graphics support:
yes for framebuffer support {*}
vesa vga graphics support {*}

go down to console display support:
video mode selection support {*}
framebuffer console fonts {*}

That should solve your problems.
