I have sound blaster live 5.1, I installed alsa drivers and ustils (0.9). and then added the following lines to modules.autoload
snd-emu10k1
snd-pcm-oss
and to /etc/modules.d/aliases the following lines:
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-1 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-2 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-3 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-4 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-5 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-6 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-7 snd-emu10k1
according to the gentoo desktop guide I have to run:
rc-update add alsa default
but that gave me an error: /etc/init.d/alsa not found; aborting.
so I continued and modprobe the drivers and run alsamixer to unmute, that worked but ...
the sound quality is very bad and I couldn'nt control the rear speakers, that section is missing in alsamixer.
Did I do anything wrong? and what is the name of the graphical mixer? I thought gamix but couldn't find it in the portage tree

Take a look at this announce, it explains that the /etc/init.d/alsa hsa been renamed to alsasound. Plus a couple of other helpful hints!

No idea what happened to the rear sound channels, I've lost them but then I don't have the HW for them.
