Ho appena fatto il grande passo, ho tolto xfree a favore di xorg.
Oltre a questo, ho anche voluto usare i driver della radeon inclusi nel kernel, ma ho un problema:
la modalita' framebuffer nativa per le radeon non va alla risoluzione che voglio (1024x768) ma si ferma alla 640x480.
Di conseguenza mi visualizza il pinguino ma non lo splashscreen (che mi piaceva molto  ).
Prima usavo il driver framebuffer generico vesa e andava tutto bene con questi parametri passati al kernel all'avvio:

ho provato con la stessa linea sia togliendo la parte vesa ma non funziona.

Inoltre ho notato che la scheda va con AGP 4X.

Ho letto da qualche parte che il bootsplash funziona solo con vesa ...
quindi non stare a smanettarci più di tanto  |

Se non ho letto male, qualcuno e' riuscito a fare andare una radeon ad una risoluzione > 640x480 ed ora l'ho fatto anche io, ma lo splash screen non penso che funzionera'  .
Faro' qualche altro tentativo, si vedra'.... grazie comunque.

Io ho una radeon 9000. Kernel 2.6.5-gentoo-r1. Disabilitando il boot logo ed abilitando il bootspalsh me lo fa vedere. Ho compilato il kernel 18 volte... alla fine ho optato pre gli ati-drivers nativi, però... con Xfree86.... ed ho disabilitato il supporto radeon nel kernel.
Non so se su x.org abbia gli stessi "effetti".
Comunque ho trovato buona docu su un howto dedicato all'installazione di gentoo su acer 803 lci. Cerca su google "gentoo 803 lci".

Ho fatto altre prove ed ho scoperto che se vado su Device Drivers -> Graphics support e seleziono solo i seguenti
*Support for frame buffer devices
*ATI Radeon display support
non posso entrare nel sottomenu Bootsplash configurator!
Ho provato anche con altri driver (non tutti) e mi da sempre lo stesso risultato quindi mi sembra logico che il bootsplash funziona solo con il vesa.

Ti ringrazio ma io non intendevo che non mi funzionava il framebuffer ma il bootsplash con il modulo per radeon, nell'articolo che mi hai indicato, il tipo installa proprio il vesa built-in per il bootsplash.
