I recently did an emerge --update system (after not updating for a very long time), and now I have no text in KDE, except in Konsole.

No menus, no desktop icon labels, no tooltips, nothing. Everything is BLANK!

What the hell happened here? And how can I fix it?

TIA,

Martin

Just a guess: Try to reemerge xfree, qt and kdebase (using the same versions you have installed).

And what if I just emerge the latest versions of these packages?

(BTW, I never quite understood the difference between e.g., emerge kde and emerge --update kde. Why does emerge kde give me a much shorter list of packages?)

Thanks,

Martin

If you update to the latest versions, you might experience problems with dependent packages that were linked against the updated packages due to API changes.

I re-emerged xfree OK, and I'm in the middle of re-emerging kdebase. No problems so far.

But there does not seem to be an ebuild for the version of QT that I am running (3.1.0-r1) any more. The closest are 3.1.2-r3 and 3.0.5-r2.

What would you recommend me to do?

Thanks,

Martin

Take the latest (stable) ebuild of qt, but you really should recompile kdebase after that again. Sorry.
Oh, and btw, to check all direct dependencies of qt which could cause trouble afterwards, do
Code:
emerge gentoolkit

and after that
Quote:
qpkg -I --query-deps qt

This gives you a list of all installed packages that need qt and could suffer from API changes.

That was quick!

Thanks, I will try it and report back later (much later...).

Thanks again,

Martin

Oh dear :(

In the middle of emerge "=kdebase-3.1.5", I get this:

Code:

 kde-base/kdelibs
    selected: 3.1.1a
   protected: 2.2.2a-r2 3.1.5
     omitted: none

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.
>>> 'Protected' and 'omitted' packages will not be removed.

>>> Waiting 5 seconds before starting...
>>> (Control-C to abort)...
>>> Unmerging in: 5 4 3 2 1
>>> Unmerging kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.1a...
No package files given... Grabbing a set.
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: line 1098: /usr/portage/eclass/kde.org.eclass: No such file
 or directory

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.1a failed.
!!! Function inherit, Line 1099, Exitcode 1
!!! died sourcing /usr/portage/eclass/kde.org.eclass in inherit()

!!! FAILED prerm: 1

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,

Martin

Hah!

I just started up KDE to see if by any chance something I did had made any difference, and amazingly, all my text is back!

I guess I can probably go ahead and update KDE now without worrying too much...

Thanks again for your help,

Martin
