that ugly windows manager isn't gnome... i think its something called "twm"... but here is what you have to do to get gnome up and running...

open up /etc/rc.conf and change the XSESSION variable to "Gnome" and change displaymanager to gdm. after that you can run gdm (which is the login manager) which will bring that up and you can get in to gnome, or run

[code]# rc-update add xdm default[\code]

which will run GDM on bootup...

hopefully that helps

What you are seeing is the TWM window manager, not Gnome. TWM is the default window manager that comes with XFree (and Xorg). For future reference, Gnome is a desktop enviroment and TWM is a window manager. Gnome uses the Metacity window manager, but Gnome includes many more features and applications than a window manager does.

To use gnome, close the xserver you are in (ctrl+alt+backspace), and type:

Code:
cd ~

Then
Code:
nano .xinitrc

Finally add
Code:
exec gnome-session

Now hit ctrl+x and save changes. If you have Gnome installed, it will now be used by default when using the startx command.

Hehe :)

On a side note, I'm not sure what it going on with the text not showing up... hopefully using Gnome will fix that.

Are you using XFree or XOrg? There could be a font issue because XOrg uses different font path settings.

Hey, I'm having the same problems as this dude, and my rc.conf is right, I have the line in my .xinitrc, but it still ignores metacity and wants to use TWM. I just reinstalled because somehing completely fubarred my last install.

ok scratch that, I finally got metacity to work, but now my gnome desktop doesn't show up at all. I mean the color shows up, but none of the icons. Any clues?
