When I get to the configuring the Kernel section in the installation manual (I used stage 3) I type:

emerge gentoo-sources

I get this error:

!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

I am installing from a universal live CD without network support.

Did you follow the installation instructions properly? Please review what you did and check if it corresponds to the steps outlined in the handbook.

I tried going through the installation twice now and have gotten the error both times. What does it mean when it asks if my portage tree is complete?

Hm... Please post the output of
Code:
emerge info
. Did you happen to change the CHOST variable in /etc/make.conf?

I also am not able to use nano to see the output. I am basically trying to leave everything as default since this is my first gentoo install. Did i need to make changes to the make.conf?

I have installed twice with the same problem occuring both times.
