Hmm ... may I ask why supermount is out again? In - Out - In - Out ...? I think it not very desirable having to constantly change configuration when updating this kernel. Maybe love is too much flux for me  |

well it was kept for user requests, now you dont have any reason to use it.
submount is in portage, use it people!
or even better, use udev+dbus+hal.

I didn't knew about submount, looks like supermount is indeed not needed anymore. |

well it was kept for user requests, now you dont have any reason to use it.
submount is in portage, use it people!
or even better, use udev+dbus+hal.

Oh well, back to rolling my own kernel now
If you don't mind I'll use yours as a base and add patches I really need (win4lin, etc) and remove others I don't need (Acer Hotkeys, etc).
Great work and thanks for taking the majority of the hard work away from me, especially as I'm a newb when it comes to patching my own kernel  |

Bummer, can't start X.
I have a abit nf7-s mobo (nforce2 chipset) and a GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE, I bet one of those make things hard for me. Is the "nforce2-disconnect-quirk.patch.bz2" patch in main kernel now?
I use the nvidia drivers 1.0.5336-r2
The last love-sources I tried was 2.6.4-rc1-love3, works like a charm
Also I noticed that reiser4 isn't in this kernel =/ |

Great! A new love release, to bad that it's not patched with Win4Lin. So I guess I have to stay with 2.6.6-rc2-love2 until there's another love-release with Win4Lin support.
(I need Win4Lin for school )

What happened for the config_hz patch that was in 2.6.6-rc2-love1?
On an old Pentium 1 it seems to make a huge difference in performance when the internal timer frequency is set to 100. For example prior to changing the value the processor usage of xmms was around 8-9% when playing mp3s. Now it is only 0.3-0.7%... And thats without any noticeable drawbacks.
Is it out of love for ever? If yes, why? And where can I find that patch?
Problem 2:
Both of these version should have dxr3 support but I really can't find it

Con's auto-swappiness patch is "broken" by nick's VM work, although it could be modified with very little work to have the same effect. Those observant will see that /proc/sys/vm/swappiness is no longer around. Nick's VM replaces it with /proc/sys/vm/mapped_page_cost which is the same idea inverted: a low number means a lot of swapping. Recent kernel threads have been back and forth on if this is good or bad. For those worshipping the kernel hackers, Andrew sets his swappiness to 100 (swap whenever remotely necessary, essentially), which is a low number in mapped_page_cost (the default is 8 - pretty low). So play around with this.
CFQ is in mainline now. The version we used to include was CFQ + more hacks that no one actually used. We dropped that in favor of -mm's CFQ (thus reviving AS), and that CFQ has gone mainline. |

Works great. Still trying to figure out how to get the bootsplash to work on my notebook, though. Dell Inspiron notebooks can be a pain sometimes if you use Linux.

Hal is hardware abstraction layer, for a windows-like auto insert notification on cds
I believe breakmygentoo has ebuilds for it.
currently running 2.6.6-rc2-love1, my first love kernel. It's true it does rock like NINJA
downloading now
(is bootsplash fixed in this one? I miss it...)

As Nate_S said, HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer. As for what it is, try the following:
(1) Emerge gentoolkit-dev, and use gensync to get the BreakMyGentoo overlay. (gensync bmg-main should do it).
(2) Emerge gnome-volume-manager-cvs. This will pull in DBUS and HAL as dependencies.
(3) Start the messagebus and hald services.
(4) Run gnome-volume-properties, and check the box that says "Mount removable media when inserted".
(5) Insert a CD.

Do you mean the one from ck-sources?

If I recall correctly, it is exactly the same as the mainline -cfq but also has io-priority support, i.e. it takes processes' nice levels into account when queueing them.
In order for it to work properly you also need this patch:

But you need to remove the 2 if statements which refer to batch and iso scheduling.
The performance difference is quite noticeable with these patches under a heavy load. For instance, with X reniced to -15, I can have an emerge world and kernel compile running in background consoles with no noticeable slowdown in X. I've been manually adding these to each love release, but is there any chance of getting them included in the patch? |
