As you all propably know, to get the letters "@~[]|{}" etc under Linux you gotta assign a button to "Mode_switch" when running X. Mostly this is keycode 115, the "Apple"-key. My prob now is: I switch between MacOS and Linux often and i regularly get confused with different functions of these buttons.
I thought if it would be possible to assign the function "Mode_switch" to keycode 64 (the "Alt", or "Option" key) and give its function ("Alt_L") to keycode 115 (the "Apple" or "Command" key) you would end up with a similar layout as under MacOS. "@~[]|{}" would be achieved with the "alt" key and "Apple" would be used for shortcuts (e.g. "Apple-q").

I've tried the appropriate xmodmap commands, but they wouldn't work (don't know why, though).
Does anyone have an idea on this?!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Code:

!! Apple workarounds
keycode 64 = Mode_switch
keycode 115 = Alt_L
remove Mod4 = Alt_L
add Mod1 = Alt_L

in my .Xmodmap does the trick...

Have fun*

Niklas

PS. Anybody care to explain why this is neiter set in X.org nor XFree?

Oh man, i gotta thank you for that soooooo much! :D
Finally i can set up the same shortcuts under Linux and MacOS! Like Christmas and Easter on the same day!

Just one last thing: You're talking of a .Xmodmap-file, where do i have to put this file? At the moment i'm running xmodmap four times in my .xinitrc to achieve the right config.

Thanks a lot, Niklas!

Try your home-dir... ;-)

and then a simple "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" in your ~/.xinitrc will do.

Cheers

Ah, i see...so xmodmap runs every entry in this file only when it is called with it. I thought there was a special file in which X11 would look when started.

Thank you again! :D
