I know that the topic of the problems people have with xfree86 has been brought up over and over, but I searched around and I couldn't find anything that related to mine.
startx boots up fine. I get a screen that the manual calls "ugly". The wierd thing is that I can type in the windows, but the text does not appear until I move the cursor to another window. And it looks fuzzy at best until I type something else in there.
Also, if i try to move any of the windows, my computer locks hard and the only way to get out is to restart.
If anyone knows the answer to my question or of another thread that can help me out, can you please point me to it.
I'm running an athlon-XP with over 700 megs of ram and a radeon 9600 w/ 128Mb of ram |

How are you starting X?
DId you config your XF86Config file?

I found these errors in my main log

yes, i had the same problem, but hten i realized, i dont even need to use this, so why am i bothering?
i also have a radeon card, prolly soemthing to dp with that |

What a funny coincidence. I have your same exact video card, and your same exact problem. That is, I HAD your same exact problem  . All you have to do is run "fglrxconfig". Make sure you backup your current XF86Config just in case  .
You might have to "emerge ati-drivers-extra" to get fglrxconf.
