Hi, the CD that I have allows me to type in gentoo at the boot prompt, but then the screen goes blank and stays that way. Once it went slightly further than that and indicated video problems, but then it disappeared too. It showed that my screen resolution is 1024X768 (correct), but I guess it was unable to find the sync. I would like to know what I need to type in at the boot prompt to lower the resolution to 800X600. The machine is an old IBM Thinkpad 600 laptop. Thank you!

for setting vga to a mode of your choice, the value for vga can be looked up at the gentoo manual:
