Anyone know of any projects that will implement a "real" DFS? I don't want a replacement for NFS (CODA or InterMezzo), but rather, I want to take the 30G free on my Gentoo desktop, and the 30G free on my Gentoo server, and make a single, mountable 60G share. Of course, from there, I wouldn't mind just adding more and more drives, from more and more systems.
I suspect that such a thing doesn't exist as it would be a great thing for P2P users. I'm more interested in getting the maximum use of my hard drives. |

Have you looked at OpenAFS ?
It's in portage, and although probably overkill for your situation, it does handle this - in fact, it was written for it. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I haven't tried it, but lustre seems really cool. That is, when I go to grad school, I hope to work on something like it. It doesn't appear to be in portage, though. |

Maybe you can take a look at "http://enbd.sourceforge.net" . Enbd is not a filesystem, but a client-server way to share a block device between two System.
It is like the NBD included in the kernel but has some improvements that will fit your needs i think, like a good support for RAID 0 beetween a local block device and a remote block device. This way you can use your two 30Gb partitions in a Raid 0 mode on the Desktop ... maybe you would like it

OpenAFS supposedly has support for 2.6 in the CVS tree. I also saw a thread about OpenAFS with 2.6 elsewhere on the forums. Try a quick search...
