|
|
I've just installed a gentoo (1.4-RC1) on my G3 imac (366 Mhz, 192 RAM, ATI Rage 128) and I have problems running XFree.
I've installed XFree 4.2.1 and KDE 3.0.3 (first KDE with "emerge kde" and then update to XFree 4.2.1 (via emerge too))
I tried to run XFree86 -verbose -configure, but it stops with the following messages:
"....
(--) Chipset ATI Rage 128 RL (AGP) found
(||) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvbe.a
...
(||) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/int10.a
...
(||) R128(0): initializing int 10
(||) R128(0): No legacy bios found -- trying PCI
(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS(5)
" (... corresponds to lines I have edited because I thought they were irrelevent or were comments on previous lines)
I also tried to do an XF86config and edit it to use the fbdev driver, but even though X started (and launched KDE as I could hear the opening sound) the screen stayed completely black.
I tried with and without DRI/DRM and AGP support compiled in the kernel, I tried to enable/disable GLX but It had absolutely no effect (except removing a few error messages when I enabled GLX but it still didn't work).
I really have no clue about what to do now. I will gladly accept any help you can provide me.
P.S. I apologize for any errors I could have made in that post due to english not being my mother language (btw is that a correct expression in english ?) |

you might want to ask in the Gentoo PPC forum. |

Moved to the PPC forum. You'll most likely get better answers out of other PPCers. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Thank you a lot, it worked perfectly.
After comparing my old XF86config and the new it seems the key to make the ati driver work was to enable the "UseFbDev" option.
Once again thanks a lot for your help. |

Could you please post your entire xorg.conf and kernel .config, I'm having a hell of a time, I have the bluberry colored slot loading imac with the rage128pro, same as the tangerine imac dv. |
