GENTOO LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- - --------------------------------------------------------------------
PACKAGE :gv
SUMMARY :Execution of Arbitrary Shell Commands
DATE :2002-10-03 10:00 UTC
- - --------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERVIEW
GV can be tricked into executing arbitary shell commands.
DETAIL
When GV detects that the document is either a PDF file or a GZip compressed file, it executes some commands with the help of the system() function. Unfortunately, these commands contain the filename, which can be considered as untrusted user input. It is then possible to distribute a file (with a meticulously choosed filename, that can even seems innocent) that causes execution of arbitrary shell commands when it is read with GV.

SOLUTION
It is recommended that all Gentoo Linux users who are running app-text/gv-3.58-r1 and earlier update their systems as follows:
emerge rsync
emerge gv
emerge clean
