running gentoo-dev-sources , 2.6.5 kernel
nvidia fx 5200
a7n8x mobo
okay i emerged gnome and i set xsession=Gnome and Display manager=gdm
Whenever i do startx it loads a blank screen witha cursor and thats it. If i left click i'm able to open up Xterm and from there i can open mozilla or gaim just fine. But theres no gnome desktop.
or
when i do # gdm , it opens up entrance and if i try to login it'll ask me if i want to do "x session" "last session" "xterm" and some other option. Well on that , I choose X session and after that it asks me about widget session, and my only option to select is "Default/failsafe",, after i select that it loads a purple screen witha cursor and thats it. Theres no way to get out of that screen, i have to manually reboot my computer.
please help, thanks |

If you want to use startx, put gnome-session in ~/.xinitrc.
If you want to use gdm, set DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm in your rc.conf and add xdm to your default runlevel (rc-update add xdm default)

cool, i got gnome up and running now, but when i did rc-update add xdm default,,, instead of doing that i did "rc-update add gdm default",, because i'm not supposed to be using xdm right??? i dont know i'm just a noob, so i guess i'll do the xdm command
but gnome is working good!
thanks for the help |

xdm (in /etc/init.d) is just a wrapper - you specify what login manager you want to use in rc.conf. _________________ Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. |
