I just completed a stage_1 install of gentoo. Everything went pretty smoothly. Most of the problems I encountered got resolved through forum threads. But there's one problem that I can't seem to find the answer to which prompts this post:
To simplify how I got to where I am:
1) stage_1 install
2) emerge xorg
3) emerge kde
4) emerge firefox
5) emerge xmms
KDE looks really great and I have my nvidia drivers working. Everything seems to work perfectly. But after installing Firefox and trying to load it up, my mouse freezes. Keyboard is still responsive and so is the rest of the system. I needed to close firefox (through the keyboard or KDE will try to restore it later) go back to terminal and restart X again. I thought this was perhaps a firefox thing...so I tried to emerge xmms next...same thing.
So I thought it could be my mouse. I have several mouse laying around so I try different ones...usb, ps/2, bypassing my kvm switch, and they all give me the same result. Mouse keeps locking up each and everytime I try to run firefox or xmms..or any other GUI app I try to install next I'm thinking...
I've played with the mouse protocol's in xorg.conf. All to no avail...
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I'm about to abandon ship. Too many hours on this one..

Maybe try XFree86 instead of Xorg, and see if that works?
unless you're set against using xfree, of course. |
