I meanwhile read a lot of posts but now I feel just too stupid to setup my YMF744 alsa system for recording. Most posts say more or less it's just turning the right knob to the right volume and set the capture to the right channel. It doesn't work for me. I can play sounds, I can hear the sound of my mic, but it's not processed for recording.
Any idea is highly appreciated - I'm about to through my PC out of the window...

i've never recorded directly from alsa, but I am successfully recording using jack ontop of alsa.. depending on the level of recording you're doing, you will probably have to install jack at some point anyways =) |

So far I used krecord or arecord and all I got was a file with silence. I'm going to try jack next days and report. Furthermore I want to point out that the trouble in only with analog sources.
Thanks. |

i just tried recording with audacity using oss emulation on alsa and it worked. double check your mixer settings and maybe try recording a stereo track (maybe it's going into the left channel?). have you tried searching the alsa-user mailing list? maybe there is a known bug.
Sound and linux is pretty frustrating, especially when you are tryign to do something new, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. So just take your time and try not to get frustrated when things aren't working... they didn't work for any of us at first |

Okay, here is the stoy:
I accidently set using alsamixergui the "Digital" lider to 100%. After that everything is alright. Kmixer is not working correctly (doesn't show the Digital mixer at all).
My recommendation: use alsamixer and the digital slider with ymfpci driver.
Thanks for support, krinkle! |

Yeah! Got it working as well. I had been using Kmix and ran into the same issue. What I did was open alsamixer in a terminal window, turned on audacity and played with the settings till something was recorded. It must be the ymfpci alsa driver (I am using two YMF 724's). Thanks for the idea! |
