Volume Control?

Hi. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm a semi-newbie. I've searched for an answer to my problem, but only see Alsa referenced. I know, I have to get Alsa working, but for now I have OSS.

My question is, how can I control the sound volume? I've tried to run "mixer" but was denied permission, even as root, and even after adding myself to the audio group. I don't even know if that would work anyway.

If it helps, I've got this running on an Ispiron laptop, and use either Enlightenment, Ice, or Evilwm as a window manager.

alsamixer.......gnome-alsamixer, ny of these should do
