Weird tar error when unpacking stage3 on jfs file system

I am getting a weird tar error when unpacking stage3 on a freshly mounted/formatted jfs system when installing 2004.1 on athlon-xp. The error message "can't remember exactly" complains about some codemap and hence leads me to believe that there is a problem in internalization or something.
This error doesnot happen when I try a reiserfs file system. any ideas why ?

i thought gentoo only had support for ext2, ext3, and reiserfs file systems

I am pretty sure jfs support comes with the vanilla kernel so gentoo will be supporting it but as to the discussion of file systems it seems they are not enthusiastic about it and it seems I run into this problem when i last installed gentoo as well. I am hoping they donot lock people into specific filesystems as long as it is supported by the kernel.
Had really bad memories of reiserfs couple years earlier.. loosing entire files when computer rebooted because of power failure. It did it consistently too. I can't stand loosing existing data so reiserfs is a no-no for me. jfs performed regularly without hickups so far...If this doesnot work I am going back to slack.

Problem lies with KBD last time I tried using JFS. Don't know the exact command, but I think the partition needs to be mounted with UTF8 support.

When mounting the / partition, try:

mount -o iocharset=utf8 /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo

Of course, replace /dev/hda3 as you would with the normal install.

And, when editing fstab, add iocharset=utf8 into the options column.

JFS should be fine, but I don't know about the AMD64 install though.

And please, don't dismiss working filesystems on the basis of your computer going down and having problems. No filesystem will protect you. You may not lose the filesystem, but if your hard drive is doing anything, you will almost certainly lose data - Reiser, JFS or otherwise.

Problem was in the stage tarball not in jfs. It happened with reiserfs too. Happily chugging along in a gentoo system now, once I figured "genkernel all" forces a re-read of /etc/fstab and makes me loose all mount points and hence hosing my install. Still having problems properly mounting /boot.
