Does my gentoo swap at all on harddisk? Here is my current stats:

Memory
Free 3.10 MB
Used 499.41 MB
Size 502.51 MB

Swap
Free 976.98 MB
Used 0.00 KB
Size 976.98 MB

When i type mkswap "/dev/hdb2" (my swap partition is hdb2)
get "Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1024446 kB"
and then i type "swapon /dev/hdb2"
get "swapon: /dev/hdb2: Device or resource busy"

my /etc/fstab
/dev/hdb2 none swap sw 0 0

I havent never seen that some swap space have used. Or when its maybe use swap partition?

Does your /etc/fstab point to the right parition for your swap? If so, try rebooting. If you don't get any errors on boot there's a good chance that your swap is working just fine.

Did you get those numbers with top?? If top sees swap then it will be on and activated (try swapoff and you should see top says swap 0k total)
I also have 512 mb memory and my swap is almost never used

Swap is only used when your RAM is full, so as long as it is up and running you should be fine.

Linux tends to grab most of your memory, whether it needs it or not...sets it aside for when it does.

I think gkrellm gives a better idea about what memory is really used. currently it says 30 % of my memory is used, while top says everything minus 30mb
