You know you want to participate, even your cat had to make fun of your funroll loops at least once in his 9 lives. |

It's good, but not as good as the version of Rhythmbox that popped a dialog box about "Using gentoo, eh? You're going to have problems" every time you ran the program.
If you want general distro-bashing, I don't think anyone can beat the mPlayer team when they were on the warpath about RedHat's customized version of gcc. They made people using that specific version of gcc type a long-winded rant about RedHat and their substandard "leaked beta" compiler as a parameter to ./configure. |

Yes, but you have to admit, RedHat really did do some shitty stuff. And it also sucks when some of your software has to be 'RedHat compatible' just to run. Not to mention having to use RPM. It's partially the reason why I tell people to use Mandrake or SuSE. SuSE just customizes and streamlines it's software (keeping realitively close to the standards) while Mandrake is just easy to get aquainted with for a Noob. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

this isn't really a dup, but many posts refer to this bug report. I actually can understand his anger - we really take debugging to a new dimension ("woot, it doesn't work with -mfpmath=sse?"). But there is a simple solution: Include a hint in the ebuild, which tells people to contact bugs.gentoo.org prior to contacting the developer.
btw: IIRC there already is a note in any recent gaim package. _________________ I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays... |

Devs often seem to be their own worst trollers/flamers, Gentoo devs not excepted (no need name names -- there are plenty of examples on the forums and on Bugzilla).
You just hope that they stay constructive; the gaim dev that posted that bug report crossed the line from being a prick to being a dick. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

How do we know that bug was really posted by that dev?
Could be a spoof for all we know.
If he really did post that, it's outta line... but understandable.
Imagine spending your free time contributing to a program
that too many people take for granted. Then having the
same noob questions asked a million times. I know I'd get
frustrated enough to post something on the website's front
page (not gentoo bugs ). I know I've been guilty of
posting questions, or bugging people for answers when I
should've googled it.
That bug was funny tho. |

I dont know about you, but I think he enjoys doing it. Its a great feeling creating a app that many people use because they like it. Its about as far away from capitalism as you can get, and I love it.
But I agree, people shouldnt take it for granted.... |

I doubt that. The Gaim people are tightasses.
Every time you say a word about file transfer, you get a 'code it yourself, n00b!!!', or 'AIMs protocol is broken, it's not our problem!'
Regardless of if the AIM protocol is 'broken' (I don't see how that is, because AOL sets what it is in the first place) file transfer works fine in Windows. And being able to transfer files over AIM to other Linux users as well as people on other platforms is pretty important, IMHO.
I guess it's just easier to come up with excuses then to make it work. |

w0ah. and here I was thinking it this was a thread about the BASH shell in Gentoo. _________________ [B]ut the undertaking was impossible from the very beginning and of all the impossible ways of carrying it out, this was the least interesting.

This one may not be the best, but...

Can you confirm that this isn't just a compiler bug? Gentoo often uses
non-official or just plain buggy versions of gcc (not on purpose, but that's the
point here). RedHat/Debian & co all use versions with several patches added to
fix those issues.
Note that I know nothing about assembler. . |
