how to use amix

Is it possible to turn on digital out on a sound card through amix? Also is it possible to turn the sound from mono to stereo?

These are the only problems I have left with gentoo to get the sound working fully. It has taken me a long time to get this far but it was worth it

I'm having some mono/stereo issues as well. aplay plays sounds in stereo, Gnome doesn't play any sounds (login etc.) and tcd / gtcd plays CDs in mono.
