Okay. I have two machines. Both running NVidia. Both same USE flags. Same Xfree config. Same version of freetype and same version of Xfree. All intents and purposes they are the same.
However. Fonts look completely different on both systems. How can this be!!!!
Bindist flag is unset on both. I've tried it on System A and it does nothing.
Take for example Firefox. Fonts look big fat and ugly if I go to say go to Slashdot. However on system B if I go to the same website fonts are smaller and much nicer.
Having rebuilt a system from scratch as I could not resolve the issue first time round I'm near melting point with utter frustration. I think Linux is in dire need of good font management, random results like this is off putting.
I've posted before with this issue and had no joy. I'm really hoping somebody out there can help.
EDIT: Sorry I'm running Gnome 2.6 upgraded from 2.4 but same issue with Gnome 2.4 on same machine. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted!

'off putting'? Is that like miniature golf? ;-)
But really - there has to be a difference between the systems you aren't maybe aware of. For one thing, have you tried comparing the fonts listed in your "Files" section of /etc/X11/XF86Config? Here's one of mine:
Section "Files"
RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
EndSection
Check it in both machines for a start. If those are the same, then compare the catalog entries listed in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config. I'll bet your difference is in one place or the other. Another possibility is you don't have all the same fonts physically loaded on the crappy looking (font) machine.

Maybe because machine A has the -kde and -qt use flags? _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Take a look at
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf
/etc/fonts/local.conf
and rebuild the font cache (fc-cache -fv --system-only). |

Are you running gnome (more specifically the gnome-settings-daemon)? This changes some font settings. |

Nah. Following the desktop guide. I don't use KDE or QT hence the reason for the use flags. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |

Yes sorry. I did not mention this is my original post, so apologies for that.
I'm assuming this runs by default? This is a fresh install. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |

I've left this 'as is'. Both machines are identicle.
fc-cache -fv does nothing I can notice. I tried recompiling X and freetype with and without USE=bindist with no difference. Does this flag actaully enable the bytecode interpreter or not? There seems to be some confusion over this looking on the forums.
Within gnome I've setup the following.
I've followed this guide also.
Not sure about 'xdpyinfo | grep resolution'. Using the default 96dpi. As I'm running 1600x1200 I get 75dpi back. This looks far too small.
Also not sure about the bytecode bit.

Most interesting - you have posted your fontserver config, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config, but nowhere in your X11 config Files section is the font server mentioned so it will not be used at all.

Why would I want a font server like XFS? I do not wish to share my fonts with any other X clients. I thought It was depreciated these days? Besides I do not have XFS running on the good machine. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |

Have you tried messing around the gnome font settings if you are running gnome? |

Yes. They are the same as the other box. First thing I checked.
Here are some screens of Firefox Here and here .
If I use Epiphany instead of Firefox, yet again the Fonts look different!!!!
C'mon Gentoo people. There must be a definitive guide out there! _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |

Maybe there's something wrong with your DPI settings. |

My next step would be to turn on xfs - just to see if it makes a difference. I always thought it was necessary for some apps - but I don't know which ones.
I just took a look at your to Firefox png's. I hate to say it, but they look the same quality to me. One is the gentoo site which is using a sans-serif font, the other is slashdot which is using a serif font. Are you saying they are supposed to be the same font? Why not compare the same url? |

The png's are both from firefox. The point I was trying to make was that even though I select the same fonts for both Firefox and Epiphany the page is displayed, or the font rendering etc is different within each.
I can't see that XFS is the solution. I don't run XFS on the other box and the same apps that I run on the shite box appaer just fine.
I followed the Font Deuglification Guide and this seems to have made a bit of a difference ont he desktop but not within Firefox etc.
Can anyone answer my original questions about xdpyinfo/DPI and the bytecode interpreter please. I need clarification on this.
I guess Linux fonts just ain't ready for mainstream use. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |

I wasn't proposing XFS as a solution, merely a diagnostic. You can always turn it off again. The idea is to try to determine which side of the app your problem is on: Firefox or the system. If for whatever reason XFS fixes your problem on the ugly machine, it tells you something. I'm not sure what, but it tells you Firefox is probably not your problem. If, on the other hand, it makes no difference, then I'd start looking for Firefox configuration differences. Have you tried dirdiff'ing the firefox config directories? |

The problem is that one the machine with the big chunky font on Slashdot, you have media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera installed and on the other machine, you don't.
Probably you have the nice MS true type fonts installed and the makers of the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf have seen fit to put vera and other less desirable fonts higher in the prefer list for serif and sans-serif family substitutions and other silly things like accepting Verdana for Helvetica instead of for Arial...
I changed mine to look like this:
Code: | <!--
Provide required aliases for standard names
-->
<alias>
<family>serif</family>
<prefer>
<family>Times New Roman</family>
<family>Nimbus Roman No9 L</family>
<family>Bitstream Vera Serif</family>
<family>Luxi Serif</family>
<family>Times</family>
<family>Kochi Mincho</family>
<family>AR PL SungtiL GB</family>
<family>AR PL Mingti2L Big5</family>
<family>Baekmuk Batang</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>sans-serif</family>
<prefer>
<family>Arial</family>
<family>Verdana</family>
<family>Bitstream Vera Sans</family>
<family>Nimbus Sans L</family>
<family>Luxi Sans</family>
<family>Helvetica</family>
<family>Kochi Gothic</family>
<family>AR PL KaitiM GB</family>
<family>AR PL KaitiM Big5</family>
<family>Baekmuk Dotum</family>
<family>SimSun</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>monospace</family>
<prefer>
<family>Andale Mono</family>
<family>Courier New</family>
<family>Bitstream Vera Sans Mono</family>
<family>Luxi Mono</family>
<family>Nimbus Mono L</family>
<family>Kochi Gothic</family>
<family>AR PL KaitiM GB</family>
<family>Baekmuk Dotum</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
|
But it's all what you prefer.

Then I don't quite see the point of you posting your fontserver configuration...?

It was asked for and therefore I posted it! Not really up on fonts hence the post.
I've got everything how I like it now anyway. Thanks to all for advice. _________________ Linux user 327411. Go get counted! |
