So I wanted to try adding the objprelink option to my USE= line in make.conf and recompiling KDE to see if I could speed things up some. Added the line, and then emerge unmerge kde. Done. Now when I type emerge kde I get the following. There is no recompiling going on, it just seems to stick it back in as is. Annoying. What am I doing wrong?
# emerge kde
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge kde-base/kde-3.0 to /
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Source unpacked.
>>> Install kde-3.0 into /var/tmp/portage/kde-3.0/image/ category kde-base
strip:
>>> Completed installing into /var/tmp/portage/kde-3.0/image/
>>> Merging kde-base/kde-3.0 to /
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
>>> kde-base/kde-3.0 merged.
* Regenerating GNU info directory index...
* Processed 78 info files. _________________ -Rob, Tired med student

kde-base/kde is a metapackage, that only purpose (as far as i know) is, that it depends on all kde-base/* packages.
if you want to reemerge kde, emerge all kde-packages again:
> emerge kde-base/arts kde-base/kdelibs kde-base/kdebase # + additional packages
only reemerging these packages will give you an idea of performance increases.
if performance is really better on your setup, you can emerge all other kde-packages too.

ps:
if you compile kde with gcc3.1, objprelink gives no real increase.
furthermore gcc3.1 beats gcc2.95 + objprelink (on my duron). |
