I was able to determine that, no matter whether kdenetwork was downloaded & compiled or installed from pkg CD, it broke KDE Desktop ...as follows:

1. Prior to adding kdenetwork, KDE came up quickly upon boot, applications loaded lightning-fast, everything worked as one would expect.

2. After adding kdenetwork, kppp took what seemed like forever to load, as did every other application thereafter --sometimes taking two to three minutes before appearing on the desktop. During the delay, there was absolutely no HD activity for long periods of time, possibly indicating some fsck'd code. KDE, when booting, would take upward of three to four minutes before the taskbar & Tool Tip box appeared.

3. Completely unmerging KDE components, one by one, rebooting & reinstalling only the bare minimum (i.e., alsa, kdelibs, kde-base, et.al.) the KDE would again load lightning fast, along with available applications.

FWIW, this was on an HP ze5570 box w/2.8ghz P4 & 512MB RAM & installed on a 28GB partition, /boot being on a 52MB partition.
Gentoo, I believe we have a problem.

How fortunate! The problem is 100% reproducible on this box. Not many distros will even boot, but Gentoo does. I'm going to hold out for the next release. Perhaps I'll have a better experience.
