|

Has anyone installed Reiserfs4 on PPC without any problems? I've heard some talk in the x86 community about getting it to work. But before I gave it a shot on my iBook I wanted to see if anyone here took a stab at it. _________________ It is the fate of operating systems to become free.

on an Albook.
I got the system installed and could not start it properly.
I had to erase the install and start from scratch using ext3.
I have not heard about anything new recently, so I cannot tell whether it has been fixed.

The last poster: it sounds like you did not make changes to your /etc/fstab
I've used RFS4 on PPC several time, but each time the system became horribly borked. I recommend using ext3 for now, but if you want instability, software not running properly, etc, give RFS4 a try and see what I mean by 'borked'
It is fine at first, but slowly gets more and more f*cked until the system is unusable. If you have to hard-reboot, ext3 comes back up gracefully but RFS does _not_. |

I tryed ReserFS too, the system installed correctly, and I was working two days. At the second day, the entire system got corrupted.
ReiserFS is currently broken for PPC systems. Do not use it. Try XFS or better ext3. |

I have a TiBook with RFS4 for the last 5 months with no problems that I can see coming from it. I have problems with the 2.6 kernels but RFS4 keeps on ticking. I must be lucky. |

reiserfs4 has in general a couple problems, and they are also there for ppc...
i wouldn't recommend it...
but we always can use more testers _________________ "I am not bound to please thee with my answers." |

I have used ReserFS on x86 for several years without problems.
But on PPC it is broken, the Gentoo documentation says something like that. |

Weird. I've used ReiserFS for a while now on PPC and I don't think anything bad has happen. I think I'll hold off for Reiser4 untill I get another computer. _________________ It is the fate of operating systems to become free.

all i can say is that my G4's disks are all reiserfs v3.6 formatted and i have yet to experience any troubles...
so afaik reiser3 is perfectly stable on ppc...
but to get reiser4 on ppc, what kernel should i use, as all the reiser4 patched kernels (speedy,lokean,...) are for x86 only and ppc-development-sources doesn't have reiser4 of course... :p
can i manually patch vanilla-sources with reiser4 and try that on ppc? _________________ ...we ain't shit...

Kudos to someone pointing out that ReiserFS is perfectly stable on PPC. It is Reiser4, a completely different beast, that doesn't work on PPC. |
