i am using ximian openoffice 1.1.55 and have the problem that it takes long to start any one of its programs. The same goes for any version of openoffice or ximian openoffice i try.
bash-2.05b$ time xoowriter
real 0m16.208s
user 0m2.757s
sys 0m0.276s
bash-2.05b$ time xoocalc
real 0m8.043s
user 0m2.895s
sys 0m0.189s
bash-2.05b$
i have installed oooqs and have prelinked. hate to say it but exel and word (ver 2003 running on windows xp) start a damn site faster. what can i do to get them to run faster, and is there any other info you would need to help me? |

hi
i have openoffice-bin 1.1.1 installed .. without prelinking ... here is what i get
Code: |
# time ooffice
real 0m20.984s
user 0m2.690s
sys 0m0.306s
|
i had xoo-1.1... installed some time ago ... it started a little bit faster (i unmerged it, since xoo had problems with displaying formulas) ... however i cannot remember any quantative starting times ...
maybe i will compile oo myself, and test it... since 20 sec is a pretty long time ...
greets

I don't want to start any arguments over which word processor is better, but have you considered Abiword? I'm not a huge advocate of one over the other, and I don't know if one is more fully featured or anything, I'm just suggesting it because Abiword is quicker on loading time that OpenOffice Writer, and, at least in my usage, which is really basic word processing, Abiword is pretty good. So, if load time is a big thing for you, it might be worth a look.
You were probably hoping for more of a technical way to speed things up, but it's the best suggestion I have. |

i just want to add my experience after compiling openoffice myself. it took about 12 hours to compile on my p4, 1.6Ghz. Now i have
Code: |
# time ooffice
real 0m15.732s
user 0m2.398s
sys 0m0.285s
|
and if already started once, than openoffice takes
Code: |
# time ooffice
real 0m4.122s
user 0m2.375s
sys 0m0.155s
|
to start. i can live with that ... (for now)
