Hi,

My system has been humming along for months now.

I'm running grub-0.94-r1 and kernel-2.6.1-gentoo.

Everything was fine, I even recently did an emerge -Uu world
and worked through all that, including an OpenOffice upgrade.

Anyhow, today I got home from work and I was surfing the
web, and my system locked up. ctrl-alt-del failed, alt-sysreq-(e,i,s,u,b) also failed. So, I hit power. When my
system booted up, I got:
Code:
grub>

So, it took some digging, booting a rescue CD, etc, and I
ended up executing the following command in grub:
Code:
configfile (hd0,0)/boot/grub/grub.conf

That worked, and I was able to boot my system. So, I figured
my grub installation got blown off the MBR? So, I came here,
read the install guide with regard to installing grub, and it
said to do:
Code:
root(hd0,0)
setup (hd0)

So, that's what I did. It seemed to work, no errors. I reboot,
and I get:
Code:
grub>

again!

My system is fine, except that grub can't seem to remember
where to read the config file from.

Any ideas, anyone?

-Mark

I wasn't sure where this belonged. It's not really an install
issue, since my system ahs been fully installed and working
for months. One could argue that it's a kernel problem
cause the kernel won't load. But the problem seems to be
with grub....ah well, moderators, move if you think necessary.

I've had the exact same experience after emerging the new grub version, it all went away when i emerged the older version (0.93.20030118) again so I've stuck with that since then.

maybe this bug (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48617) is related to it.

Thanks man! That sure sounds like the problem. I'm at work now,
but I'll try it out as soon as I get home!

Well, that wasn't the problem. The symlink of menu.lst pointing
to grub.conf is just fine . I did this:
Code:
bash-2.05b$ ls -l /boot/grub/menu.lst
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           20 Apr  6  2003 /boot/grub/menu.lst -> /boot/grub/grub.conf

and that looked fine. To validate that it was, I did:
Code:
vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

and it put me in vi editing the /boot/grub/grub.conf file,
so the link is fine.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

-Mark

Are you using any SATA disk? Could you give more specific info about your hardware.

This is an older system:
ASUS P2B-DS motherboard
Dual P-II 450MHz CPUs
768MB RAM
Three Seagate Cheetah SCSI drives, 2x18GB, 1X9GB
SCSI CD-R, 4x Write
SCSI Plextor DVD-ROM

It's 100% SCSI, no ATA or IDE devices of any kind.

Does that help? As I mentioned before, gentoo has been fine
on this hardware for months.

Thanks,

-Mark
