Is it possible to install a new kernel without doing a hard reboot?

Like... the old kernel shutting itself down, closing all apps, and then instead of rebooting just telling the system to execute the new kernel?

Short answer: Nope.
Long answer: I remember seeing an article about this somewhere, but I don't think it would be worth the trouble.

It;s trure this would be handy.

I have to reboot to get back to console after X becasue my nvidia driver seems to dump on the frame buffer.

It would save quite a bit of time if I could reboot from grub rather than rebooting the BIOS.

I'm playing with a few X settings and everytime something does not work I need to reboot. Looong.

Would also be nice to get my console back without rebooting of course but so far no ideas have come forward on that one.

There is a kernel patch called kexec that is intended to allow you to do that kind of thing, but I think it's still pretty far away from being ready for general use. It can be made to work at the moment with some effort, but it's really not worth the trouble.

If you have to close all apps to start a new kernel, is there a reason to want to not reboot? I could see this being useful from an uptime standpoint, if you had services that had to stay going.

i think kexec resets your uptime iirc because init gets restarted when the new kernel loads. i think the only benefit of the kexec is that you don't have to go through the POST which isn't really a benefit imho as the post only takes a few seconds anyway. i suppose it woudl be useful on some large server that took an age to POST??
