I downloaded the 2004.1 universal ISO file and now I have no idea what to do, the way it's set up is just a level of folders on the root, that doesn't seem right, so I just burn it just like that?

yes you do :) check the md5 sum first tho. The Gentoo Hand Book should give you most of the help you need. It's a great peice of documentation, I recommed you check it out.

Burn the .iso into a CD. Then put the cd into the cdrom drive and reboot. Make sure your BIOS is set to load the cdrom before the harddrive.
