I am trying to install Gentoo 2004.1 on an old Celeron box and have forgotten whether it is classified as an i586 or i686.

Would someone please tell me whether I can use the i686 stage3 or the generic x86 stage3.

Thanks.

I untarred the i686 Stage3 and found that tar no longer worked when I tried to untar the portage tree. It came up with some checksum errors.

I then untarred x86 Stage3 and was then able to untar the portage tree.

Interesting discovery. When I build the kernel, I think I'll set it as an i586.

Where can I find some information on the differences between i586 and i686.

Thanks.

Anything past Pentium Pro (i586) is an i686, as is your Celeron. The tar errors seem completely unrelated, and it could have been a bad download/burn for the i686.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I think it must have been a bad CD burn. I checked the iso against its md5 and it checked out OK but I was getting read problems when copying distfiles to my HD.

I might try burning another CD and see if the problem goes away.

Pentium Pro is a i686 too. It was the first i686.
