Freeware/Open Source Games for May '04

well, I decided to try a little experiment for this forum along the lines of the monthly desktop threads...

The Idea:
This thread will give people a chance to discuss any free and/or open source games they are currently playing, new and old. Hopefully people will be able to keep up with any games that are "hot" and it will allow others to find any games they haven't played yet.

Why a single thread?
Seeing how successful the monthly desktop threads are, I believe there are gamers who would like to point out fun and interesting games they're currently enjoying. Having a monthly thread gives people in this forum a chance to quickly catch up on these games.

Why not just visit a website like Happypenguin?
I like happypenguin.org, but I feel that people would enjoy an engaging discussion in the comfort of their favorite forum (read: here). Additionally, I feel there's an opportunity here to discuss many freeware games which are capable of running in Wine. As we all know the Wine project is changing rapidly, so I hope that this thread will also help people find how to get some of these games running, in terms of Wine versions and whatnot. However, you can discuss native games as well!

My offering for this month:
I choose two entertaining games which are completely opposite, but each fun in their own way. Note, both of these games were run with Wine 20040505, compiling from the tarball found on the site, no fancy dlls.

Seiklus

Seiklus might best be described as a combination of Mario Brothers meets Out of This World, but with more jumping and no dying. You find yourself stranded on a planet in which you must collect tokens of varying colors. Simple in it's execution I played this a few hours today and thought it was entertaining.

rRootage

rRootage is like many old school shmups, but the game modes provide extra interest. It includes Normal mode, Psy mode (get points for allowing bullets to graze you), Ikaruga mode (switch colors to avoid attacks), and more. A fun game playable with only the arrow keys and two buttons (Z and X by default). Send your brain on vacation.

I actually got this game running with Wine 20040505, but the in-game text is screwed up (not the menus, but once you start playing). Anyone else have this problem? It plays like a combination of Quake and Worms. I was tempted to make it the third game in my first post, but for some reason after I change my settings with the included Config.exe program (in an attempt to fix the text) the game won't play. Still, lots of fun!

Another schmup recommended to me by a friend. Supposedly it will compile with GCC 3.0+ for native play, but I can't get it to work. Anyone want to take a crack at it? Gives an error when run in Wine.

I don't have much to contribute with, (I mostly just play Q3) but I'll post a link to a thread I started: Lode Runner Online works with wine
It's a comercial game, but it's free now.

I don't think I have to explane what game Lode Runner is, I guess most of you allready know.
It's a new version (1995) and the GFX looks nice. You can find the game and a screenshot here.

Seiklus looks cool, I'm gonna check it out.
