Hardware lockups from Promise RAID controller

I have also experienced problems with my gentoo install (under 1.2 with the gentoo-kernel). I have narrowed the problems down to my Promise Fasttrack RAID card. My computer will not lock up at all and continues to run brilliantly when I do not have the raid drive mounted. However, some time after I mount the drives (set up as a two disk striped RAID array), the computer locks hard. I have tried using both xfs and reiserfs on the drives, and I have both used the ataraid + pdcraid kernel models as well as compiling promise raid support into the kernel. None of these prevent the lockups. Any ideas?
