Just wanted to post my feedback on running xserver (www.freedesktop.org) on my laptop.

I gotta say, if you like x.org, you will *love* xserver. I downloaded it from the freedesktop xserver, using their installation guide, and it went fine.

However, there is a problem with running the Xati server, so I use either Xfbdev, or Xvesa. To run xserver as a normal user, I start it up as root and open an xterm, configure LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/fdo/lib and start /opt/fdo/bin/xcompmgr, then su - <username> and start /etc/X11/Sessions/xyz.

You gotta try it, it really does rock, starts really quickly, looks *amazing* and is rock solid.

If you get an error stating that Xserver cannot establish any open connections, then see this post: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=106391&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=xserver+cannot+establish&start=425

and search for "cannot establish".

Hope you enjoy :)

Colin,

when I try to "autogen" Xproto, I get this error message:

Code:

autoreconf-2.59: running: automake --add-missing --copy
automake-1.5: configure.ac: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE' must be used
automake-1.5: configure.ac: installing `./install-sh'
automake-1.5: configure.ac: installing `./mkinstalldirs'
automake-1.5: configure.ac: installing `./missing'
autoreconf-2.59: automake failed with exit status: 1

Have you had the same problem and how did you fix it?

Thomas

Yeah, you need to set WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7 and WANT_AUTOCONF=2.5 before compiling.

Sorry for the delay, just got back from watching "Kill Bill volume 2" :)

Thanks,

the WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7 was the missing thing.
