Ok,

I'm trying to setup a linux router for a friend of mine. I allready have one at home but I didn't set it up personally so I'm still new at this.

So far what I've done is setup the two network cards, one connects to the internet and the other gets a local IP (192.168.1.1). I setup dhcpd and it is working. Each computer on the network gets an IP from 2-9. They also get the correct DNS address for the ISP.

But this is where I'm stuck, how do I get the network that I setup to be able to reach the outside world. Right now I can contact the router machine, but no further then that. Note, I do not have iptables setup right now, I don't need a firewall yet, are ip tables necessary?

Yes, you need iptables to use the masquerade functionallity that pretends all packets from private network look like they are coming from the router (and translate back to the correct machine when replies come back).

A quick search of the forums for "masquerade" (and a peek at http://wiki.gentoo-portage.com's Home Server guide) will get you there.

Shorewall is a great front-end for iptables. You can configure it to do masquerading, firewalling and DNAT'ing. They've done a really good job of getting all the bases covered for iptables.
